Transgenic animal models of Alzheimer’s and related disorders

I am delighted that the Tg2576 mouse model of pre-clinical Alzheimer’s disease, developed in my laboratory, has been sent to more than 100 laboratories around the world and has been used to generate over 500 publications.  I feel immensely gratified to see that at least 200 of these publications have demonstrated the beneficial effects of various interventions, several of which are now being tested in humans with Alzheimer’s disease.  I am excited about the prospect of developing safe means of preventing Alzheimer’s disease.  I believe that Tg2576 mice are trying to tell us how to achieve this.  If we pay close attention to what they are saying, we will be able to prevent tens of millions of people from developing Alzheimer’s disease.  Imagine how wonderful that would be!  I am fascinated by the rTg4510 mouse model of fronto-temporal dementia, also developed in my laboratory, which shows many features of the middle and late stages of Alzheimer’s disease.  I hope that our studies of Tg2576 and rTg4510 mice will enable us to understand the connection between the early and late stages of Alzheimer’s disease.  I feel incredibly lucky to be working with extraordinary scientists to probe the biology of all stages of Alzheimer’s disease using our mice.
